Nineveh Plains - Shabak representatives in the Nineveh Council have threaten to take the case of land distribution in the Nineveh Plains to the Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.
Earlier this month, the Nineveh Council approved the distribution of land in the areas near the Assyrian towns of Baghdeda and Karmalesh to the Shabaki community that lives in remote villages.
Popular Council member and Member of Parliament Khalis Isho along with other Assyrian politicians formally protested the decision, citing concerns of demographic change in the Nineveh Plains.
On May 22, 2012, Nineveh Governor Atheel Najafi issued a decree that officially stopped the distribution of the land.
Shabaki council member Qusay Abbas was qouted as saying "Iraqis have the right to won land in their respective hometowns in accordance with the Iraqi constitution."
Abbas continued to say,
"we will go to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, if the Governor of Nineveh does not reverse his decision."
