A
get together organised on Thursday 21 Dec 2017, by the Assyrian Universal
Alliance-Australian Chapter and the Assyrian Australian National Federation
celebrating Christmas with all members, supporters, parliamentarians, Fairfield
police and representatives of the Armenian, Greek, Jewish, Italian, Vietnamese
and Assyrian organisations at Marconi Club.
It
was attended by: Mayor of Fairfield City Frank Carbone, Mr Chris Hayes MP,
Federal Member for Fowler, Mr. Guy Zangari MP, State Member for Fairfield and ,
Dr Hugh McDermott MP, State Member for Prospect.
Mr
David David , President of the Assyrian Australian National Federation welcomed
all guests thanked them for their support over the past years and wish them a
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. He then called upon members of Parliament
and the representatives of the Jewish community and the Armenian National
Committee of Australia to say few words on this occasion.
Mr.
Hermiz Shahen, the Deputy Secretary General of the Assyrian Universal Alliance,
officially welcomed the guests. He extended a warm welcome to representatives
of the Local, State and Federal Governments for their attendance and support
over the years. Mr. Shahen spoke about the Assyrian Universal Alliance
activities in Australia in the past year raising many appeals to the Australian
government and international organizations on behalf of the Assyrian Nation.
“The objectives of such efforts have been to advance the Assyrian cause
internationally, on the humanitarian as well as the political front, seeking
support of democratic governments and international bodies, in defending their
indigenous rights, and their highly prized national identity, culture,
heritage, language and religion and to accord autonomous status (self-governed
region) to the Assyrians on the land of their ancestors in the north of Iraq.
With your continued support, I am confident we will achieve much more in the
future” Mr Shahen said.
He
continued by saying that "we promise our people that we will continue with
our efforts and advocacy for the years to come. We will not rest until Assyria
is restored on the map of Iraq again".
All
speakers praised in their speeches the role of the Assyrian Universal Alliance in
its continued deliberations and meetings with the Australian government. They
talked about the inevitability of the Assyrian peoples struggle to obtain their
full rights and freedom in Iraq. They blessed this great occasion, expressed
their appreciation to the organisers.
