NEW YORK — U.S. President Donald Trump highlighted the persecution of Christians around the world in an address to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, calling for greater international attention to the issue.

“Christians are being persecuted around the world,” Trump said in his speech, according to Christianity Daily. He criticized what he described as insufficient attention to the issue by the U.N. Human Rights Council.

Trump Raises Religious Freedom Concerns

Trump presented the persecution of Christians as part of broader human rights violations that he said occur under some of the world’s most repressive governments.

He also referred to Venezuela, Cuba, Greenland, NATO and the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Turning to domestic affairs, Trump highlighted what he described as achievements by his administration in areas including the economy, employment, investment, taxation, border security and crime.

He described the U.S. economy as strong and emphasized the country’s military capabilities, while also pointing to developments in technology and energy.

Trump’s comments placed religious freedom and the protection of Christian communities among the issues raised before the U.N. General Assembly.
